Content Editing and Consultation through a Gender Inclusive Lens
What I do
With over a decade of experience in storytelling and content creation focused on stories for and about women, non-binary people, and LGBTQ+ folks, I work with clients to sharpen their choices and the intentionality of their work. I offer feedback through an intersectional* and gender-inclusive framework aimed at helping you deliver language that meets your intended impact. We’ll discuss language choice, your positionality as an author, and how to steer away from harmful tropes around gender, sexuality, race, religion, class, ability, and more that may be unintentionally operating in your work.
I support entrepreneurs and storytellers by asking crucial questions, researching relevant historical contexts, and editing materials so that they can lean into their own brilliance and expertise with complexity and integrity.

How I do it
Sharing your work can be a vulnerable and tender process. I begin each and every collaboration with a conversation about a client’s specific project goals in order to understand the kind of feedback they want to receive. After listening keenly to their objectives, I meet them where they are in their process. I believe that shame kills creativity and I offer my questions and observations from a place of curiosity and compassion.

Building on the work of Black feminists before her, professor Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” to describe the multidimensionality of the ways that Black women experience oppression. Intersectionality has come to be used more broadly, as Crenshaw would say, “as a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects.” When I say intersectional in this context, I mean my goal is to help people in writing into multiplicity, and complexity, and the wholeness of themselves and the world around them in a rigorous way. I want to help people avoid producing narratives that perpetuate (non-exhaustively) misogyny, transphobia, racism, queerphobia, ableism, classism, xenophobia, fatphobia, whorephobia, and sex-negativity to the extent that I can see them operating.
That said, the lens of my lived experience has limitations and it's important that you find the best consultant for your work.

Looking for constructive feedback and editing on an article, artist statement, personal essay, cover letter, website copy, casting call, etc.?
I will read, edit, and offer feedback on your materials aimed at ensuring your text is as clear and intentional as possible. We will talk through gnawing questions, brainstorm solutions, and determine a set of next steps for revision. Together, we will bring your words directly into alignment with what you wish to communicate.
Includes reading time, notes, edits, language revisions, and a 30-minute virtual discussion.
Script Consultation
$300
Additional consultation is available at $60/hr.

I will read your script and offer thoughtful questions to hone the clarity of your creative voice and examine the impact of your characters and narratives. I specialize in working with writers who are writing in nontraditional forms and breaking genres in their work. I’m here to help unlock doors to your own courageous creative voice while advocating for thoughtful and responsive representation on the page, stage, and screen.

Love writing, hate researching? Love it all but don't know where to start? I can help!
Researching histories of people of marginalized genders and identities can be tricky. Much of U.S. history has been told through a straight, white, upper-class, Christian male lens. Paper trails have been penned through the lens of the powerful. Archival evidence can leave gaping holes where records have been destroyed, those who never wrote their stories go unrecognized, and those without the means to amplify their narratives go unseen. It is the work of a gender historian to creatively research the past to piece together stories that have been erased.
I’m here to help you with the research process! Drawing on my historical research training, I will compile a list of articles, essays, books, and summaries pertaining to the historical period or topic you are writing about.

Historiography

When a historian begins delving into a particular subject, they put together a historiography - an in-depth inquiry into what has been written on it before to determine how their perspective and research will offer a unique contribution to the field. (You can also think of this as market research, but that’s truly not my deal).
Yet, sometimes as artists we skip this incredibly useful step in constructing our visions.
Focusing on the medium you are working in, I will compile a resource list and offer brief summaries of books, theater, movies, music, and visual art that have tackled this topic. We’ll work together to get crystal clear on the distinctive voice, lens, style, and content you are bringing to your work.

Research Deep Dive

I’ve found that some of the most interesting information comes with patience, persistence, and quite a bit of time. I will compile a preliminary annotated bibliography (research list) of books, articles, essays, art, and primary sources (sources written at the time) pertaining to your topic of research. The list will include a summary of each piece including the main argument, point of view, and sections that are particularly relevant to your inquiry. I’ll work with you to determine a set of next steps for how you might build from this research in your creative work.
An introductory meeting to clarify your goals, 20 hours of research, a 1-hour mid research check-in, an annotated research list, and a 90-minute debrief.
